Behind the fund

A word from co-founder James Beshara:

The inspiration behind the Dvelo Fund is the idea that firsthand experience with developing issues is more powerful than any text, video or second-hand account one can find without leaving our developed nation. In the summer of 2007, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity, with a grant from Wake Forest University, to study in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, my experience would not have been possible had it not been for the grant from my university.

Sadly, many universities do not have adequate funding for ‘study-abroad’ research grants and students are discouraged by their extreme expense. My experience and opportunity there literally changed my life, and since my return I have felt an incredible urge to help the plight of the disadvantaged and marginalized in the developing countries I visited. The urge I speak about has led to the founding of two non-profit organizations (one concerning microfinance and this one here!).

Soon after my return, I realized this “urge” was not uncommon. I have since met several students from several universities that continue to feel compelled to help the people they were fortunate enough to meet in their travels and research. My hope is that the Dvelo Fund will offer students the same opportunity I had, and in turn, they might return from their experience and feel compelled, as I and so many others have, to continue to assist those that need it most.

I appreciate the help of Dr. Sylvain Boko and Lincoln Wheeler my two co-founders and the vision they have for Dvelo Fund.  I would also like to thank our contributors, since none of the opportunities we provide to students would be possible without your continued support.

Take care, God bless,

James
